The long shadow of Paraguay’s military dictatorship

Latin America has long been one of the most dangerous regions for human rights and environmental activists. Hundreds of people are murdered every year, in crimes that have a sad tradition on the continent.

Some are linked to the anti-communist repression of the 1970s, as shown in the film “The Condor Still Flies.” Back then, with the support of the United States, political opponents of right-wing dictatorships were kidnapped, tortured and murdered – part of a campaign called Operation Condor.
