Naples: Inside the Mafia’s Crime Metropolis

Bloody feuds and streets littered with rubbish have tarnished Naples’ perfect image. Crimes of all kinds and trafficking are the hallmarks of the Camorra, the Neapolitan mafia, which is the city’s main employer. From the creation of small illegal jobs, such as car park attendants who park scooters for a few euros and work as informants for the mafia, to the lucrative waste disposal market, the mafia has managed to exert its influence over the entire Neapolitan economy. Some residents are fighting back, others are learning to live with it. This is the case with the ‘neomoldici’, popular singers who are often just children. The nemoodici can earn up to €100,000 per year singing the praises of the Camorra.
