When he was appointed Prime Minister by Boris Yeltsin in August 1999, Vladimir Putin, a former member of the KGB who had joined the institution out of conviction at the age of 23, was a man in the shadows, totally unknown to the general public. Less than a year later, he was elected President of Russia with 52% of the vote and made his re-election in 2004 a veritable plebiscite.
