In April 1975, Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, was invaded by cohorts of thin, haggard teenagers, dressed all in black and heavily armed. They were the communist army, nicknamed the “Khmer Rouge” by King Norodom Sihanouk a few years earlier. Immediately, they began to empty the city of its inhabitants, marking the beginning of the Cambodian genocide which would leave nearly 2 million dead between 1975 and 1979.
